What is a Medical Treatment Visitor Visa?

A UK Medical Treatment Visitor visa enables individuals to come to the UK for a short period of time to:

  • Receive private medical treatment at a hospital or other medical facility;
  • Receive treatment at an NHS hospital, as long as the care is paid for by their own government under a reciprocal healthcare arrangement;
  • Donate an organ to a family member or close friend - this includes being assessed for suitability as a donor match.

What Are the Key Eligibility Requirements for a UK Medical Treatment Visitor Visa?

In order to successfully apply for a UK Medical Treatment Visitor visa, applicants must meet the following key requirements:

  • Must not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits, or make the UK their main home;
  • Must be a genuine visitor seeking entry or stay for a purpose that is permitted;
  • Must not undertake any prohibited activities;
  • Must be able to support themselves during their trip (or have funding from someone else to support them);
  • Must be able to pay for their return or onward journey (or have funding from someone else to pay for their journey); and
  • Must meet the additional requirements for visitors coming to the UK to receive medical treatment.

How Long is a Medical Treatment Visitor Visa Valid for?

A Medical Treatment Visitor visa is granted for either 6 months or 11 months.

If an applicant’s medical treatment takes longer than anticipated, they can extend their visa for 6 months. There is no limit on how many times this visa can be extended.

Applicants can apply for a visit visa which is valid for 2 years, 5 years or 10 years. A long-term visit visa is ideal for applicants who will need to travel to the UK multiple times over a certain period of time.

How Long Does it Take For a Decision to be Made?

The Home Office usually process an Academic Visitor visa application within 3 weeks.

If eligible, applicants will be advised whether they can apply to get a decision faster. The Home Office charge additional fees for these priority services.

How Much Does it Cost?

The Home Office fee for a Medical Treatment Visitor visa for a period up to 6 months is £100. The Home Office fee for a Medical Treatment Visitor visa for a period exceeding 6 months and up to 11 months is £200.

If an applicant’s medical treatment takes longer than anticipated, they can extend their visa for 6 months at a cost of £1,000. There is no limit on how many times this visa can be extended, however applicants will need to pay £1,000 each time they do.

However, if applicants wish to apply for a long-term visitor visa for 2 years, 5 years or 10 years, the Home Office fee is £376, £670 or £837 respectively.
