What is a UK Transit Visa?

A UK Transit visa enables individuals to travel through the UK on their way to another destination country within 24 or 48 hours.

There are 2 types of transit visa options, which are:

  • Visitor in Transit visa

    The Visitor in Transit visa enables applicants to pass through UK border control, but they must leave the UK within 48 hours. The Home Office fee is usually £64 but this may slightly change depending on which country applicants are in.

  • Direct Airside Transit visa

    The Direct Airside Transit visa enables applicants to catch an onward flight from the same UK airport at which they arrived, and they must leave the UK within 24 hours. The Home Office fee is usually £35 but this may slightly change depending on which country applicants are in.

What Are the Key Eligibility Requirements for a UK Transit Visa?

In order to successfully apply for a UK Transit visa, applicants must meet the following key requirements:

  • Must genuinely be in transit to another country and have taken a reasonable transit route;
  • Must be able to enter their destination country; and
  • Must genuinely intend and are able to leave the UK within 48 hours after their arrival.

How Long Does it Take For a Decision to be Made?

The Home Office usually process a Transit visa application within 3 weeks.

If eligible, applicants will be advised whether they can apply to get a decision faster. The Home Office charge additional fees for these priority services.
